This is a Washington state Rhone blend of 40% Grenache, 35% Syrah, and 25% Mourvedre – hence GSM. This wine demonstrates the potential for Washington blends to compete with Chateauneuf du Pape. Wine Advocate rates it 95 and says, “…the wine is full-bodied, has no hard edges, a big, layered mid-palate and blockbuster length. Count me impressed.”

3. Rodney Strong Rockaway Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, 12 x 750 ml

The 2012 Rockaway was rated 94 by Wine Spectator, who called it “a remarkable wine…” while Parker said it is “…impressively endowed and built for the long haul…90+.” It is a huge Napa Cabernet from an outstanding vintage.

4. Boekenoutskloof Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, Syrah 2013. 6 pack of each, 12 x 750 ml

Boekenoutskloof is one of South Africa’s premier wineries, perhaps the finest in the Franschhoek Valley. Production is small and highly allocated; only 89 cases of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon and 189 cases of the Syrah came to the US. The 2013s are not yet rated, but in the past decade, the Wine Spectator has rated Cabs from this vineyard in the 90-93 range, and the 2011 Syrah was given a score of 92 by Wine Spectator.

Robert Brittan was a top winemaker in California before returning to Oregon, in 2004, to begin to craft cool-climate Syrahs, Chardonnays, and Pinots. Since it began production in 2006, the critics have rated this Willamette Valley winery extremely highly: the 2012 Pinot was rated 94 by Wine Spectator, and the 2011 received a 94 from Robert Parker, and the 2013 vintage also was rated 94 by Wine Enthusiast.

Chassagne-Montrachet, located in the south of the Côte de Beaune, produces, along with the other villages of the Côte de Blancs, the most famous white wines in the world. This wine, as with others from Maison Joseph Drouhin, is generous and elegant. This wine has not been rated, but past vintages have generally been 90 or above.

Forbes called Termanthia Spain’s best red wine, and in 2004, Robert Parker awarded Numanthia’s flagship wine a perfect 100. The 2012 has yet to be reviewed, but Antonio Galloni wrote of it, “I also had the chance to taste the newly bottled 2012 version of this wine when I visited the bodega this fall and it looks to be a stunner. It’s densely packed with dark fruit flavors; although a bit inscrutable right now, it’s clearly destined to be a remarkable wine.”

This lithograph displays half landscape and half sky in blues and grays, and a silvery river bend in the distance, and trees framing the sides. Russell Chatham’s characteristic soft, gauzy lights cast a visual stillness and peace. The artist truly brings the beauty of Montana to life. Originally owned by Bruce and Kathryn Carpenter, who were instrumental in the creation of the first Wine & Food Festival.

Penfolds Grange is an Australian wine icon, and 2010 is the 60th anniversary of its introduction. The Wine Advocate called it “near perfect” and awarded it 99 points, while James Suckling gave a perfect rating of 100 and wrote, “The 2010 Grange arrives with much expectation and does not disappoint. This is a powerhouse, structurally superior to both the 2009 and 2008 vintages and breathtakingly dense, long and precise.” This vintage is 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon.

This is the Mondavi Family’s ultra-premium wine: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot. Highly rated it was given 94 points by James Suckling, who said, “One of the best wines from here in ages, emulating the legendary greatness of the 1974 cabernet.”

Bibi Graetz is a young winemaker with an almost cult-like following. He makes unique small-production super-Tuscans. The 2007 received a perfect 100 in 2004. Colore is 1/3 Sangiovese, 1/3 Canaiolo, and 1/3 Colorina. It is rated 94 by the Wine Spectator.

Staglin makes small- production premium Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2009 and 2010 were rated 95 and 97 by Parker. 2011 was a more difficult vintage, but Galloni said, “Staglin’s 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon might very well turn out to be one of the best wines of the year” and rated it 94.
