Friday Evening Raffle Item

Banfi, Brunello di Montalcino, 1996, 5.0 Liter

Sponsored by Joel E. Guthals

Americans John and Harry Mariani created this estate from scratch beginning in 1978, hiring enologist Ezio Rivella to oversee the winemaking. The work was completed in 1984, and today 2,400 acres of the 7,100 acre property are planted with grapes. Made from 100% Sangiovese grown in several estate vineyards, this Brunello spends two and a half years in large oak casks before being bottled. It's the highest-rated Brunello from Banfi to date.

A Brunello for everyone, this wine is solid and focused, with mineral, blackberry and licorice character. Full bodied and very chunky, with lots of round tannins and a long, long finish. Needs to open. Rated 94 by Wine Enthusiast magazine.

Antinori, Tignanello, 2001, 3.0 Liter

The original Super-Tuscan, Tignanello is produced exclusively from the Tignanello vineyard. It was the first Sangiovese to be aged in small oak barrels, the first red wine in modern times to use a non-traditional grape variety Cabernet in the blend and among the first red wines made in Chianti with no white grapes. With the 1971 vintage, the wine became a Vino da Tavloa della Toscana and was named Tignanello after the vineyard from which it originated. Beginning with this vintage, Tignanello stopped adhering to the rules laid down by Chianti Classico Disciplinare and with the 1975 vintage, white grapes were totally eliminated. Since the 1982 vintage, the blend has been 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Tignanello was not produced in the 1972-1974, 1976, 1984 and 1992 vintages. Intensely fruity and complex on the nose, with hints of wood, full bodied, rich and complex in the mouth with exceptional structure and a lengthy finish. This wine was rated 91 by Wine Spectator magazine.
